The Fifth

Guest List

Lola: a 5-year-old who dressed as a different famous black woman from history and whose mother posted a photograph of her posing each day during Black History Month. She channeled Misty Copeland, Rosa Parks, and Michelle Obama, among others.

ImeIme Umana: the daughter of Nigerian immigrants and the first black woman to be elected as president for the Harvard Law Review. Ms. Umana intends on becoming a public defender

First anonymous SpaceX passenger: one of two private citizens who will journey to the moon for approximately a week in 2018, utilizing a Crew Dragon spacecraft and a Falcon Heavy rocket. It is estimated by Mashable that the trip will cost the space tourists “at least tens of millions of dollars.” The identities of the travelers are not yet public.

Second anonymous SpaceX passenger: one of two private citizens who will journey to the moon for approximately a week in 2018, utilizing a Crew Dragon spacecraft and a Falcon Heavy rocket. It is estimated by Mashable that the trip will cost the space tourists “at least tens of millions of dollars.” The identities of the travelers are not yet public.

Yigal Ozeri: an Israeli painter based in New York who paints large, unbelievably photo-realistic portraits of women surrounded by nature. A documentary by Vincent Zambrano called Yigal Ozeri: The Chameleon offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the work and life of Ozeri.

Lara Setrakian: a journalist and the co-founder and CEO of News Deeply, a new media platform aimed at presenting information and developing strong communities for current issues and events. She presents her insights about reforming the field of journalism and the mass media in a January TED Talk, “3 ways to fix a broken news industry.”

Dr. Charity Wayua: an IBM public sector researcher in Nairobi, Kenya. Her team works to identify the causes of the poor delivery of government services and develop strategies for efficient and effective delivery.

When I consider this list of guests, I am deeply frustrated that I cannot make it a reality. Imagine, if you will… a passionate and socially perceptive 5-year-old girl, a driven and altruistic law student, two prospective private space tourists, a photo-realistic painter who is obsessed with nature, a pioneering female journalist, and a public-spirited problem solver. How incredible the conversation between these individuals would be. There would be discussion about the role of women and their empowerment, art and its value in our society, the ever-changing and fascinating field of science and space, and the failures and successes of governments world-wide. I suppose there are other types of conversations, perhaps small talk, which would occur. Regardless, these are intelligent, dynamic, enterprising, and spirited individuals, each with remarkable insight into various subject areas. What a dinner party they would have.
